Black Inks?

Hey, I was just wondering what black ink everyone is using. I have always used Kuro Sumi because i heard good things about it, but i'm nervous to try anything else.

You know, I just switched to kuro sumi recently and I'm not sure if I like it or not. I love how it outlines, and I beleive it's a good true black for solid black work, but it kinda makes me grumpy for shading. I think I'm going to go back to talons.
I've also been considering pelicans for shading... Any opinions on that?

No, havent heard of pelicans. But i know what you mean about the Kuro Sumi. I havent had much luck with its shading either.
Have you done any work with MOM's Black ink for shading?

Yeah, I didn't like it too much though. It's very thick and kind of hard to get solid in the skin. Talons have given me the best work before all around, so I'll probably be going back to that.
Pelicans I've heard aren't good for solid black, because it heals lighter than other true blacks, but I hear it's great for shading.

If you need a real Black Black try Eternal, personally I use Sumi, Eternal, and some new stuff from Cam that I really like not just the black but all the colors is Tat Wax ink, no amines and they will also give you reports on the heavy metal count which is nil and expected to meet any up coming standard in Calif. and other places to come. 8) ...Ron

Intenze is a great solid or dark black. For lining it's a little thin so I mix it with a little mom's to line with. As for shading, pelican mixed with witch hazel or distilled water depending on the piece for shading. www.inkdreamstattoo.com

These statements are just my opinion based on what I have experimented with. Agreed on Intenze for fill in/tribal (it blows out/spreads too much for outline). Talens is a warmer black, and heals with a slight reddish brown hue during greywash. It eventually greys out over a few months. On fair skin, it is BLACK! Pelikan heals greenish to me, and because of its transparency, makes it harder to judge shades. Moms is ok for fill in/tribal, seems to fade much quicker.

It's funny Black used to be just that Black, seems today in the great Art that is being produced Black has become more like any other color with all the shades and tones, and of coarse the holy grail the true really really dark Blackest Black. Has anyone used a little purple in there Black. :?: ...Ron

Painting it is Arrr I have found that some Ink makers have been known to add colors to that old carbon. Have you ever layered color to black in a Tattoo (multiple sessions, like a cover-up). Didn't check what forum is this can we say that. Have a fun week end all! :D ... Ron

Hi guys,
Do you mean to say that adding a small amount of red to black is creating deeper black? I use Sharpz true black for lining and filling but I do experience problems with filling. I am about to switch all colors to Intenzewhich seems to be great.
Nice weekend to u 2!

I use dynamic black for fill, a guy in detroit turned me on to it, if your using sumi you cant dillute it with water to get tones because its not water soluable, try witchhazel or even listerine. Eternal and pelican are good pelican and talens should be cooked down to remove the vegitable varnish or it will turn grayish green after about ten years. Black Onyx is good too there are a lot i guess, but you just stick with what works for oyu I reckon.

I use tribal black from chorusline in Germany,It's not to thick for lining but still thick enough to make solid black pieces. I see some people are using pelican ink, there was an article in a french tattoomagazine couple of years ago,by the pelican-company saying their ink was not suitable for tattooing and warning about the allergic reactions people can get on the chemicals they add for fastdrying on paper. I tried adding some red to black, but never noticed any difference.

I've been tattooing for 6 years, more recently as a professional. But I've used Starbrite Black, Intenze, Pelikan Black, and Kuro Sumi here more recently. I find Kuro Sumi is way better than anything else I've tried, and it stays true black. For my shading, I usually like to keep darker tones working into color so I just stay with the same black and lighten up my needle a little. But for portraits and black and grey, for my wash, I used a little glycerin and witch hazel half that, and half sumi black ink, and it works just fine. Better than any other wash I've used. They sell the kuro sumi grey wash too. But as far as black, I use Kuro sumi. It will take a lot to make me change that, because of the results I've seen.

I had some questions i work out of a shop In ontario Canada and my boss is a real peice of work he thinks hes Mr.tattoo but he's just well you get the point. I really cant ask him anything because he'll just tell me thats stupid and tells me how he does it iv done all my research and i know that great artists like bob tyrrell swear by pelikan but i just dont have the guts to use it. From what i have research that inks used now accually arent ink but pigment some cut with witchhazel some alchol based and others But pelican ink is a streight up drawing ink im finding it hard to try it out i could use some feed back so any answers would be greatly appreciated!

Sumi is my preferred. Tried talens, pelikan and sumi, I find sumi is the best for the work I do.

Sumi for lining- dynamic for shading. Depending on the other colors in the piece. I'll add a drop of opposing colors to black, just to offset it from the rest.
